Empowering Researchers through Practical Training in Environmental Safeguards and Academic Research Writing
Background
In June 2021, the Everest Center for Research and Development Partners (ECRDP) organized a comprehensive 3-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening the environmental and social safeguard competencies of project teams engaged in AfDB-funded infrastructure initiatives in Nepal.
In parallel, ECRDP recognized the growing demand for academic skill enhancement among emerging scholars. As part of its commitment to research excellence, the workshop was expanded to include specialized training for young researchers and postgraduate students. The academic sessions focused on:
- Developing well-structured research proposals
- Conducting Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR) using recognized frameworks such as PRISMA
- Writing high-quality research papers for peer-reviewed journal publication
The dual-track training successfully built institutional capacity while nurturing the next generation of research professionals in Nepal.
Participants
- 25+ project staff from infrastructure and environment sectors
- 30+ postgraduate researchers from various Nepali universities
- Faculty and professionals from ECRDP and international collaborators
Outcome
- Participants developed their own research proposals with mentorship.
- 12 participants successfully submitted SLR papers to Scopus-indexed journals.
- Multiple attendees used the training to secure research grants and improve M&E components in their environmental projects.
Impact
- Strengthened institutional compliance with environmental policies.
- Enhanced Nepal’s academic research ecosystem by empowering emerging researchers.
- Promoted integration of academic rigor with development practice—a core value of ECRDP.
