A Three-Day Workshop for Postgraduate Students and Early-Career Researchers
Background

In response to the growing demand for statistical analysis skills among young scholars and professionals in Nepal, the Everest Center for Research and Development Partners (ECRDP) conducted a 3-day intensive workshop on Advanced SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The event, held in Kathmandu, aimed to build practical competence in applying advanced statistical techniques using SPSS software for social science research, policy analysis, and academic publishing.

Objectives
  • To equip participants with advanced skills in data management and statistical analysis using SPSS.
  • To demonstrate the application of inferential statistics, multivariate techniques, and regression models.
  • To improve the ability of researchers to interpret statistical outputs and integrate findings into high-quality research publications.
Workshop Structure
Day Topics Covered
Day 1 Data preparation, variable transformation, data coding, and reliability analysis (Cronbach’s Alpha)
Day 2 Descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square tests
Day 3 Correlation, linear and multiple regression, factor analysis, and interpretation of outputs for reporting
Each day included a mix of theory, live demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and Q&A sessions, enabling participants to work on real datasets.
Participants
  • 40+ attendees including Master’s and PhD students, early-career researchers, and faculty members from various academic institutions across Nepal.
  • Participants were from disciplines including public health, business, environmental studies, education, and social sciences.
Outcome
  • Over 90% of participants reported increased confidence in using SPSS for their research projects.
  • Several participants completed data analysis for their thesis work during the workshop.
  • Participants developed draft statistical sections for journal manuscripts, receiving live feedback.
  • A follow-up network group was formed for continued peer support and expert consultation.
