Background & Rationale

Khandbari Municipality, located in the eastern hill district of Sankhuwasabha, is undergoing rapid urbanization and land-use transformation. With increasing challenges related to unplanned settlements, deforestation, infrastructure pressure, and disaster vulnerability, there was a pressing need to build local capacity in sustainable land use planning.

 

To address this, the Everest Center for Research and Development Partners (ECRDP), in collaboration with local authorities, organized a two-day intensive training workshop tailored for elected representatives and municipal employees.

Objectives
  • To introduce the principles and importance of sustainable land use planning in the context of local governance.
  • To enhance technical and practical understanding among municipal officials regarding land zoning, land classification, and integrated spatial planning.
  • To support participatory decision-making by aligning local development plans with long-term environmental and socio-economic sustainability.
Training Contents
Day Session Topics
Day 1 – Overview of sustainable land use – Land use trends and challenges in Khandbari – Legal frameworks and national guidelines – Participatory land-use mapping methods
Day 2 – Municipal-level land use planning process – Practical exercises on zoning and GIS mapping – Integrating climate resilience in land use – Group work: Drafting ward-level land use visions
